DUES/LABELS

Be sure to check your mailing labels on this newsletter.  If your label shows ‘03 at the top it means that you have not yet paid your 2004 dues for the Childers/Childress Family Association.  This is the last newsletter that you will receive until your dues have been sent in to our treasurer, Julia Childress, 10093 Clear/P. WEBSITE

Don’t forget to look into the website (www.childers/childress.com) because Jack is continually updating it.  If you haven’t taken part in the DNA project there is still time.  You will see all that is needed on the website.  The more that participate in this project the more accurate are the findings.  We are all related and this is the proof!  The website has a pretty good area for exchanging information and questions with others.  It is called the Bulletin Board.  Many researchers are looking for information that you might have; and you might be stuck on a family member who is right there.

Journey to the Past in Tennessee

After the 2003 meeting in Nashville, Tennessee, Cookie Lamon invited all members to the Representative Osborne Childress home and cemetery in Williamson Tennessee.  This home was built in the early 1820’s.  Many CFA members went and visited this historic home of Representative Osborne Childress and the cemetery where he is buried.  The photo below shows the descendants of Representative Childress standing at the front door of this beautifully maintained historic home.  The picture on the right is of Bill Trott standing by the cemetery monument in honor of Representative Childress.

REMOVING COUSINS—GENTLY

(Rootsweb.com) If you have ever wondered how you are related to other members on your family tree here is the explanation from Rootsweb,  “A reader recently wrote about finding a cousin with whom he shares a 3-great-grandfather but not the 2-great-grandfather. He wanted to know "how times removed are we?"
The answer is you are not removed at all. The genealogical term "removed" means that a person belongs to a different kinship generation.
In this instance the reader and his new cousin are 4th cousins. Their mutual ancestors are the reader's 3-great-grandparents, which mean their 2-great-grandparents were siblings; their great-grandparents were 1st cousins; their grandparents were 2nd cousins, and their respective parents were 3rd cousins.
However, the "removed" part enters the picture if you want to compare what YOUR children are to this new 4th cousin. They would be HIS 4th cousins once removed (because they are one generation removed from this kinship (4th cousins). Such a relationship is recorded as 4C1R. ”

Do you have any info on John Childers such as birth date & place of birth?  I've been told that he died in TX. His wife was Mary Ann Taylor & she died in or near Giles Co., TN. The son (Josiah Taylor Childers) who is my ancestor was born in Giles Co., TN in 1817 died in San Augustine, TX in 1879
Though I have been able to trace Josiah through the census, John remains elusive. I have no definitive proof of ancestry.  As you know, proofs of the facts are very important.  Do you have info or suggestions for me?

Jesse Childress (29 April 1792—14 March 1867),

Submitted by:  Martha Childress Ferris (F14)

My ancestor was Jesse Childress (29 April 1792—14 March 1867), who was born in Charlotte County, VA and died in Wallonia, Trigg County, KY.  He married Lucy Jackson on 18 May 1814 in Mecklenburg County VA.  She was the daughter of Jonathan Jackson and Mary Davis.  Jesse’s father is in dispute at the moment.  Some researchers say that his father was William Childress (b: 1755, d: before 10 Nov 1806), the son of Jeremiah Childress, but other researchers and I say that his father was Benedict Childress (b: 1760 VA, d: 19 Dec 1794), who was listed as the grandson of Jeremiah Childress in his will.  Benedict’s wife was Nancy Jane Burton.  It is uncertain who Benedict’s father and mother were.
I have ended this with my father’s (Paul Childress) generation.  I have also been careful not to list the names of anyone who is still living.  I hope that this might help you in your research and also help me to solve the mystery of Benedict or William.
